This painting is an exaggeration of the staircase balcony inside of the house where Gustave Moreau lived and painted. Gustave lived with his parents in their home throughout his entire life. Their home is now a museum of Gustave's art in Paris, France. He is one of my favorite artists. I love to peruse his drawings (there are thousands) in his museum. Most days you have the place to yourself.
